Gynecological Issues |

|
| The information below is for the general education of our patients. We
encourage you to make an appointment and discuss in detail any gynecological
issues or concerns you may have as they relate to you individually.
|
| HPV, Pap tests, Colposcopy and HPV vaccinations |
| Currently, there is a lot of information coming out about the Human Papilloma
Virus (HPV). As a gynecological practice we are working hard to keep up with the
latest information and advances in the treatment of cervical problems.
|
| The Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) is acquired through sexual contact with an individual
who has the virus. Many times there are no outward signs or symptoms of the virus. Your body
may harbor the virus for decades before any changes occur. HPV is broken down by sub-type of virus
as either high-risk to cause cervical cancer or low-risk to cause cervical cancer. The low-risk form of HPV
is associated with genital warts.
|
| The Pap test is a screening for cervical cancer and the changes that happen to the cervix
before cervical cancer occurs. Both cervical dysplasia (the changes to the cervix before
cancer) and cervical cancer are caused, in part, by HPV. About five percent of pap tests come
back abnormal. Depending on the severity of the abnormality, some paps are also tested to determine
if HPV is present. Based on these results, your doctor may recommend colposcopy.
|
| Colposcopy is an exam during which the cervix is magnified to allow your doctor to look
for evidence of dysplastic changes or the changes that occur before cervical cancer. Typically,
a biopsy is taken to identify the severity of the dysplasia and to guide us in determining
your treatment options. Colposcopy is a procedure that is done in our office.
|
| Very recently a vaccine against HPV has been developed, called Gardasil. This vaccine specifically
targets four sub-types of HPV. Two of these sub-types are associated with genital warts (type 6 & 11) and
two with cervical cancer (16 & 18). The vaccination is done in 3 shots given at day one, two months later
and six months later in individuals from 9 - 26 years of age. In clinical trials it proved to be very effective
against NEW EXPOSURES. It cannot protect against HPV that you already have or other subtypes to which you
may have been exposed. This is not a substitue to pap tests and vaccinated individuals should still
have regular pap tests at their doctor's direction. If you are interested in vaccination, please make an
appointment to discuss it further.

the methods listed above will not prevent the spread of Sexually Transmitted
Diseases (STD’s).
|
|
| Minimally Invasive Surgery |
| It has been the philosophy of this practice to critically evaluate advances in the field of
obstetrics and gynecology to ensure that we will improve our ability to care for our patients. One
of the biggest advances in the last few decades is minimally invasive surgery which uses small incisions
and cameras to accomplish your surgical needs. All of our practicioners are well trained in these various
techniques. If you have questions about a specific procedure, we encourage you to make a
consultation appointment to discuss your care and that procedure.
|
| Menopause and Hormones |
| Many women experience a wide range of symptoms including cessation of menses,
hot flashes, mood swings and insomnia. There are a variety of treatment options
available for specific symptoms. Please talk to your doctor to learn about what
is right for you.
|
| Breast Pap Test |
If cancer is found in its early stages, particularly if it is still contained in the breast, 5-year
survival is near 100%. Identifying patients at the greatest risk of developing
breast cancer allows us to monitor their breast health more closely. Currently, most women (over 70%)
diagnosed with breast cancer have no identifiable risk factors other than age.
